Underground Train Modernisation for the Capital
In February of this year Vossloh Kiepe received an order from the Berlin Public Transit Authorities (BVG) for the modernisation of three prototype vehicles from the F74, F76 and F79 vehicle series.
An update to the current standards is necessary as the underground
trains were made in the 1970s. Modernisation of current vehicles
prolongs the lifespan, increases comfort and thus the attractiveness of
the underground system.
In addition to the renovation of these three prototype vehicles, an
option exists on equipping a total of 88 series and 9 reserve systems
which are to be supplied by the end of 2019. This job is a good prelude
for the new Vossloh Kiepe modernisation competence centre. This was
brought to life almost one year ago in order to develop effective
modernisation concepts while taking diverse customer requirements into
consideration. Vossloh Kiepe has bundled its competences – in
particular with regard to the ever-decreasing funds available for the
renewal of the public transit vehicle fleet – and is now able to offer
genuine alternatives to new vehicles which are often very difficult to
finance.
The core component in the renovation of these Berlin underground trains
is a new control unit for the camshaft gear. In addition to that, a new
static converter for the DC 110 V system common in underground trains,
new door and heating controls as well as other electronic components
will be provided. The entire pneumatic piping system will be renewed by
a qualified subcontractor arranged by Vossloh Kiepe.
The prototype vehicles will have already been renovated by the coming
autumn and the testing can then begin. A detailed concept will be
created in parallel with the updating of the vehicles. It will detail
how the series reconstruction is to be later carried out by the BVG
personnel.
