Stadtbus Winterthur orders new 18-meter trolleybuses from Vossloh Kiepe and Carosserie Hess
Winterthur, the second largest city in the Canton of Zurich, is expanding its vehicle fleet by 21 new articulated trolleybuses, supplied by the Düsseldorf traction specialist Vossloh Kiepe as well as the Swiss vehicle manufacturer Carosserie Hess AG.
The special feature of the low-floor buses is that Vossloh Kiepe has developed a completely new drive model for the "Swisstrolley III". At the request of the customer and for the first time, the vehicles are equipped only with a single traction engine. The challenge for the Düsseldorf specialists was to transfer the usual high quality of the drive electronics into a single-axle version. The results of numerous tests and test drives led to a smooth yet powerful acceleration which impressed Stadtbus Winterthur. The articulated trolleybuses are low-noise and demonstrate pleasant driving characteristics with low energy consumption.
Vossloh Kiepe and Carosserie Hess have already been successfully working together for years and have furnished numerous Swiss cities with their environmentally friendly trolleybuses – for example Zurich, Lucerne, St.Gallen, Lausanne and Geneva.
Delivery of the new low-floor buses to Stadtbus Winterthur will start at the beginning of 2010 and is scheduled to be finished by spring 2011.
