Modernisation of 25 light rail vehicles for Bonn
Vossloh Kiepe to modernize 25 light rail vehicles for Bonn Transit Authority (Stadtwerke Bonn) In May this year, Vossloh Kiepe has been awarded an order by Stadtwerke Bonn (SWB) for the modernization of 25 light rail vehicles of the B 100 S type. The so-called B-vehicles were built between 1974 and 1977, making it necessary to upgrade to modern standards.
Modernizing existing vehicles extends the service life, increases
passenger comfort and thus the attractiveness of the light rail
vehicles. The first modernized vehicle is scheduled to go into
operation in March 2011, followed by 5 vehicles per year, so that the
order will be completed by 2016.
This project marks another success for Vossloh Kiepe's center of
excellence for modernization which was established just over a year
ago. This is where effective modernization concepts are developed while
taking into account widely varying customer demands. As a result,
Vossloh Kiepe has pooled its expertise and is able to offer viable
alternatives to new vehicles which are often difficult to
finance.
The core components for the modernization of the SWB's light rail
vehicles are the new DC choppers of which two per vehicle replace the
existing composite cam switch. In addition, two new static converters,
driver's cab air-conditioning systems, heating control systems and new
instrument panels are being incorporated. Further electronic components
such as video surveillance equipment, emergency call facilities for
passengers, fire detection systems and tachographs are also being
replaced. In addition, the entire DC 750 V cabling system is being
renewed.
After the fifth vehicle, Vossloh Kiepe is only going to supply
components, as vehicle modifications shall be completely carried out
internally by SWB personnel from then on.
