Train Trams for the Balearic Islands in Majorca

SFM (Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca), the public transport in Majorca’s Balearic Islands, has ordered six new Train Trams from Vossloh Rail Vehicles. Vossloh Kiepe will be equipping these vehicles using its innovative drive technology.
The vehicles will be used on the stretch from Manacor to Artá, located on the northeast coast of Majorca. Manacor is the second-largest city and is the central traffic centre point in the east of the island. From there, the already existing rail line to Artá will be electrified and renovated; the new vehicles are scheduled for passenger usage in the spring of 2011.

The Train Trams (two-direction vehicles) are used in both regional traffic as well as urban public transport as a streetcar. In the latter, a top speed of 70 km/h can be reached; in regional traffic they can reach speeds of up to 100 km/h.

This order is of special importance to the Vossloh AG since this will be the first time in the company’s history that both mechanical and electrical equipment is supplied from one source. Vossloh Rail Vehicles, situated in the Spanish Albuixech, Valencia, will be responsible for design, production and delivery of the new Train Trams. Like Vossloh Kiepe, Vossloh Rail Vehicles is a 100% subsidiary of the Vossloh AG.

The Düsseldorf specialists for drive electronics are responsible for the project planning, delivery and ultimately for the setting-up of the traction equipment for the two-direction vehicles.
The Train Tram drives are equipped with three IGBT direct pulse inverters (DPU). Each operates two low-maintenance 4-pole three-phase asynchronous motors. Using the newest IGBT Module generation, it was possible to develop a very compact and light-weight DPU. The entire sensor system and inverter control have already been integrated. The traction equipment supplied by Vossloh Kiepe can achieve an acceleration rate of 1.2 m/s².
