Energy-saving and comfortable: Public transport in Luxemburg
...setting a good example – Service buses equipped with the latest technology from Carosserie Hess and Vossloh Kiepe in use for six months now
An amazing 30,000 kilometres – that's how much each of the new,
spacious and comfortable hybrid double-articulated buses operating line
16 has covered from May until November 2009.
The new vehicles should be able to fulfil a multitude of requirements,
to cope with uphill and downhill stretches en route, to react both
reliably and flexibly in the congested traffic of a city centre and on
rural roads as well as on the highway. This is of special importance
since the route covers the airport, the city centre and the main train
station before continuing on towards Howald. Special focus was put on
the energy consumption of the 24-meter long buses, which face a lot of
stop-and-go traffic every day.
It is exactly this type of driving that the newly developed Vossloh
Kiepe hybrid drive has been adjusted to and provides sound performance.
Employing a special type of energy management, driving characteristics
are optimized depending on the type of road being driven on at the
moment. The energy gained during braking is provided again for the next
starting – this not only make senses from an environmental point of
view but also saves money as well. Performance peaks are reliably
covered, the diesel motor uses less fuel and shows a significant
reduction in emissions.
