50 tramcars for Munich modernized by Vossloh Kiepe

First of 50 ultra-modern tramcars for Munich now in passenger service Vossloh Kiepe and IFTEC delivered a convincing overall package in mid-May

At the end of last year, Stadtwerke München (Munich Municipal Utilities) commissioned the consortium of Vossloh Kiepe/IFTEC for the modernization of 50 type R2.2 tramcars. The first prototype of the vehicle series has been finished and put into operation. The passengers have also expressed their approval of the new design as well as the upgrading to the newest technology.
The R2.2 product line of tram railcars consists of six-axle low-floor articulated railcars which have been used since the mid-nineties on all Munich lines. In addition to the repairing of any damage, another reason for the renovations is the optical upgrading of the vehicles.

Working from the IFTEC site in Leipzig, Vossloh Kiepe is currently incorporating all new and electrical components as well as those in need of modernisation. They are also carrying out the final pre-delivery inspections, putting the vehicles into operation and furnishing them with driver airconditioning as well. The AC units are from the Viennese subsidiary Vossloh Kiepe Ges. m. b. H who specialise in the development of effective heating, ventilation and airconditioning.
In addition, Vossloh Kiepe is mounting the video and infotainment system and providing the 50 low-floor vehicles with modern pivotable sliding doors that correspond to the newest technical standards. Thanks to their special design, eight additional places can be added in the passenger compartment. The driver's cab has also been adjusted to the vehicle’s new inner design. It is now equipped with newly designed displays by Vossloh Kiepe. Vossloh Kiepe is also responsible for the assembly of electrical components on the driver’s console.

The successful combination of functionality and design has also persuaded the Munich transportation authority to choose the Vossloh Kiepe NBS 400 Emergency Brake Switch. In 2007 the design of the emergency brake switch was awarded the “Oscar” of design awards, the iF Gold Award.

This short project term is of special importance for the consortium partners of Vossloh Kiepe and IFTEC: the last of the 50 modernized vehicles must be functional and also handed over to the customer by the end November in 2011.
