The electrically-driven trolley bus is a user-friendly and ecologically beneficial public transport vehicle of the future especially in heavily polluted major cities such as Mexico City.
For this reason, the Servicio de Transportes Eléctricos del Distrito Federal (STE) - transit authority of Mexico City - has decided to modernise its trolley bus fleet which serves a network of over 500 route km.

Kiepe has developed and manufactured an electric traction equipment in well proven and robust DC contactor technology especially for this project. 55 sets of this equipment will be installed in new trolley buses type 502-T of the Mexican bus manufacturer MASA, as well as in old buses replacing the original propulsion equipment. The Kiepe package comprises the following equipment:

  • Foot-Pedal Cam Controller
  • Electro-magnetic Contactor Bank, equipped with 10 DC contactors,  10 fuses, current relay and terminal strip
  • 600 V-Instrument Panel including contactors, fuses, voltage relay and terminal block
  • Driving and Braking resistors arranged in 4 frames
  • Current Collector

The Foot Pedal Controller is based on a proven design which has been specially adapted to meet the requirements of the trolley bus service in Mexico City. The controller which is located on the floor of the driver´s cab, mainly consists of driving and braking pedals, driving drum, braking drum and eddy current brake. By operating the two pedals, the driver activates the driving and the barking drum. When either pedal is operated too quickly the eddy current brake will be activated. This brake, which is dependant on the traction motor current, acts on both control drums and monitors the notching sped. The system thus inhibits excessively rapid changes in acceleration or braking rates there by protecting the equipment against damage and ensuring improved travelling comfort for the passengers through jerk-free starting and braking.
The electromagnetic contactor bank is controlled by auxiliary contactors driven by the drums.
