Vossloh Kiepe is helping the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) bring its over 25-year-old B-IV fleet into line with the latest state of the art. In order to install modern drive technology in the subway vehicles equipped with camshaft controllers, SEPTA has ordered 127 new traction kits from Vossloh Kiepe.

IGBT DC choppers are being used. A single powerful chopper serves all four traction motors of the four-axle car.

The revamped vehicles will be able to feed the energy generated during braking back into the contact line—an impossible feat with the original camshaft controller equipment. The new system is also distinguished by its very smooth travel and braking behavior without perceptible steps during acceleration and braking.
