Kassel, Germany

Delivery: 1998-2001

In 1997 and 1998, the Kassel public transport authority (Kasseler Verkehrs-Gesellschaft AG, KVG) decided to purchase 22 eight-axle low-floor articulated light rail vehicles (LRV) designated 8NGTW that will be delivered in two lots between 1999 and 2000.

The vehicles which are certified according to BOStrab (Regulations on Operation of Tramways) and EBO (Federal Railway Operation Ordinance) are planned to run on KVG´s tram network as well as on the future Lossetal-railway. Today this former railway line of the German Bundesbahn has been privatized and will be equipped with a DC 750 V catenary to allow the operation of the 8NGTW vehicles. This measurement will allow a public rail transport service using the new low-floor LRVs in addition to the already existing freight traffic on this line. The new vehicles will be operated between Hessisch-Lichtenau and Kassel and on the existing tramway lines in Kassel.

Kiepe designed the 8NGTW vehicles in close co-operation with Bombardier Transportation. Kiepe supplies the complete electrical equipment including the entire traction system. Most of the equipment is designed, manufactured and extensively tested in the Düsseldorf and Vienna factories of Kiepe. The final assembly of the vehicles takes place in Bombardier´s factory in Bautzen.

The electrical equipment contributes to achieving the aim of optimizing life cycle costs as the concept is characterized by its high reliability and low maintenance requirements achieved by

  • optimized modularization of the electrical components,
  • enhanced maintainability,
  • modified bus structure linking subsystem controls,
  • modern PC-based diagnosis software featuring detailed service, data and fault recording.

The vehicle is particularly passenger- and user-friendly and excels due to its low energy consumption, low noise emission and high electromagnetic compatibility.
