The Rheinische Bahngesellschaft AG (Rheinbahn Düsseldorf, i.E. Düsseldorf Transit Authority) operates a route network with a length of approx. 150 km. It is intended, that new low-floor tramcars will be used on surface routes. Deliveries into 1998 will comprise of 48 single-directional vehicles NF 6 (long version).
The tram stops of the routes concerned will be raised to floor level of the vehicles providing a step-free access. The 70 % low-floor tramcar represents an excellent combination of design, comfort and up-to-date technology. Especially regarding power engineering, electronic systems are used which are setting a trend for weight, energy consumption and maintenance standards. By taking advantage of the latest components of power and control electronics, Kiepe has developed a state-of-the-art traction inverter, which sets the standard for three-phase AC traction systems. The GTO pulse inverter is supplied directly from DC line voltage and controlled by a microprocessor drive/brake control unit. It operates in combination with a robust and maintenance free three-phase current asynchronous motor. For the on-board power supply, the newly developed Static Converter equipped with IGBT technology, is used. This product, like the other electronic Kiepe products, is also equipped with the Kiepe PC based Diagnostic System. System wiring is significantly reduced as most of the control cables have been replaced by a serial data bus system (on-board information and control system). It has been developed by Kiepe and uses a single twisted pair cable to control the remote devices.
