Dortmund: low-floor light rail vehicles NGT8

Delivery: 2007-2010

The DSW21 keeps people on the move in the city of Dortmund, Germany, where annually over 127 million passengers revert to this closely meshed network of bus, tram, and urban rail services. Altogether 111 light rail vehicles operate on eight lines covering end-to-end over 100 km.

With a view to rejuvenating its fleet the city transit authorities in 2005 awarded separately Vossloh Kiepe and Bombardier Transportation contracts for the supply of 47 low-floor light rail vehicles NGT8, with an option for another five included in the contract. The first of the new low-floor vehicles were delivered in September 2007 and by the close of 2010, they will have replaced the existing high-floor units running on the east-west lines 403 and 404. The vehicles offer ample comfort, safety and security features for both passengers and DSW21 staff. The passenger zone has its own temperature-control system for an agreeable environment.

The operator area is air-conditioned and complies with the requirements of Germany’s workers' compensation insurance. For security purpose, seven mini cameras are mounted in the ceiling of the passenger compartment. As system supplier, Vossloh Kiepe assumes responsibility for project engineering, supply, installation and commissioning of the electrics. The Company is supplying the traction and control systems, the entire drivelines, the power converters, the air-conditioning and climate control units, integrated vehicle data management with the aid of WLAN, and the interior and exterior passenger information display systems.
