Croydon, Great Britain

Delivery: 1998-1999

The new metropolitan light rail system centred on Croydon links East and West Croydon and extends to Wimbledon in the west and Beckenham, Elmers End and New Addington in the east. The new system complements and provides inter-changes with existing rail services to London.

From 1999 there are 24 new passenger vehicles, each of which can provide comfortable transportation for up to 208 people.
The state-of-the-art Croydon vehicles are similar to the low-floor trams delivered to Cologne (K4000) but customised for local requirements.

A combination of optimum design, proven modern technology and a completely new system installation provides passengers with a safe, reliable and comfortable journey with the additional benefit of ease of access via a uniformly low entrance and exit level.

Of particular importance is the well-proven vehicle design which facilitates minimum maintenance and low energy consumption. Kiepe laboratory tested and track-proven technology in the propulsion system and guide components provides the foundation for the vehicles? reliability.

This is achieved by direct overhead-line driven GTO pulse inverters plus microprocessor controlled drive-brake controller in conjunction with robust and maintenance free asynchronous traction motors.

For the on-board electrical supply system, a newly developed static converter in IGBT modular construction technology is employed. This is equipped with a Kiepe continuous diagnosis system and connected by means of the Kiepe on-board information and control system.

The Kiepe data bus system coordinates the complete guide and control technology. Many of the control functions are conveyed via a two-core ring circuit installed throughout the entire vehicle, thus eliminating considerable conventional wiring. Cruise-control provides a smooth and comfortable ride.

Kiepe produces and delivers the complete electrical propulsion and control electronics such as:
- Direct pulse inverter
- Electronic drive-brake controller
- On-board information and control system
- Diagnostic software for drive and control system
- Master controller
- Static converter
- Braking resistors
- Passenger information system
- Heating and ventilation for passengers and driver
