Bonn Transit Authority (Stadtwerke Bonn GmbH, SWB) operates a light rail network that links the city-centre of Bonn with the cities of Bad Honnef, Siegburg, Bad Godesberg and Cologne.
Due to a planned expansion and renewal of the rolling stock, Kiepe supplied 15 sets of electrical equipment for the new high-floor light rail vehicles. Revenue service with the new high-floor LRVs began in 2003.
The new high-floor LRVs are similar to the vehicles known as K5000 operated by Cologne Transit Authority (Kölner Verkehrs-Betriebe AG, KVB). Kiepe is responsible for design, supply and commissioning of the entire electrical equipment of these vehicles. Besides electrical systems such as passenger information system, CCTV, WLAN interface and automatic train protection Kiepe´s scope of supply includes components like the propulsion package, the static converters, the vehicle control system and the air-conditioning system for driver´s cab and passenger compartment all designed and manufactured by Kiepe. The power converters which are installed in easily accessible underfloor containers are of a state-of-the-art, air-cooled IGBT type. All system controls use a data bus that operates according to the internationally standardised CAN protocol. Functions that have an impact on safety in general are monitored using dedicated control lines that also serve on a back-up level. A powerful diagnosis and monitoring system cuts down the maintenance efforts and increases the vehicles availability.
